The Furman Smith Law Library of Mercer University of School of Law is seeking applications for a Reference Librarian, a non-faculty, professional librarian position.

The reference librarian will be responsible for teaching a required for credit Introduction to Legal Research course for first year students and teaching upper-division legal research courses as a part of a unified legal research curriculum overseen by the Director of the Law Library. In addition, as a member of the reference team, the reference librarian provides legal reference and research services both in rotations working on the reference desk and in the librarian’s office. The reference librarian also provides research support to law faculty as a part of the library’s faculty liaison program. Additional duties for the reference librarian may also include providing support to the Assistant Law Librarian for Research Services with projects and tasks assigned to the reference department, and performing other duties as assigned by the Director of the Law Library. This position also serves on various committees within the law school, and attends seminars, conferences, and participates in local, regional, and/or national professional associations and activities.


Applicants must hold a J.D from an ABA-accredited law school and an M.L.S. from an ALA-accredited library school. Candidates must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills in order to work effectively with faculty, staff, administrators, students, alumni, and other library patrons. The ideal candidate will have a demonstrated ability to teach in the classroom, and a strong desire and dedication to teaching. The successful candidate will also have a current knowledge of legal research tools and techniques, a desire to stay current with changes in legal research and law practice technology, and a high aptitude for service.

Salary is commensurate with experience.

The Furman Smith Law Library serves approximately 400 law students and 30 law faculty, as well as the local bar. All professional librarians and classified staff report to the Director of the Law Library. The Law School is part of a dynamic university with degree programs in liberal arts, medicine, pharmacy, nursing, health professions, music, engineering, business, education, and theology. The University has more than 8,500 students on campuses in Macon, Atlanta, and Savannah. Mercer Law School is located in a beautifully restored historic district in downtown Macon. Macon is attractive for its affordable cost of living as well as its close proximity to Atlanta.
