Mercer University is searching for a Director of Athletic Bands and Faculty member in the Townsend School of Music. This is a 9-month, renewable, non-tenure track appointment. Rank will be determined based on the credentials of the final candidate selected. Primary responsibilities include the Marching Band and Pep Band. The candidate will be expected to maintain an active recruiting and retention program. Additionally, the candidate will teach supporting courses within the Townsend School of Music commensurate with departmental needs and candidate’s qualifications. The candidate will be expected to contribute to the life of the department and university through service activities, advising students, completing scholarly or creative work in the field, and serving the broader community. The candidate will be a brand ambassador of the university representing both the academic and athletic program in pursuit of spirit and excellence.


A minimum of a Master’s degree from an accredited college/university is required along with at least three years of collegiate and/or secondary level teaching experience. The candidate should possess communication skills sufficient to function cooperatively and collegially with the entire faculty and staff of the school, college, and university. Credentials should demonstrate organizational, motivational, and communication skills suitable for recruiting and maintaining a highly active and visible athletic band program. Candidates must demonstrate a strong commitment to an undergraduate liberal arts education program, excellence in teaching, recruitment, and retention of students. The successful candidate will work in conjunction with the Director of Instrumental Activities in the Townsend School of Music.

The successful candidate will be an experienced and visionary leader and be responsible for planning and administering all aspects of the program including: developing the band during scheduled practices, providing leadership and direction for band members; maintaining responsibility for expense control with program expenditures; and developing a schedule for practice and performance.
