The Columbus Roberts Department of Religion at Mercer University invites applications for an entry-level, tenure-track Assistant Professor of Religion specializing in Islam for a start date of August 1, 2018. Preferred candidates should also demonstrate an ability to teach religions of Eastern origins. The successful candidate will have a clear commitment to excellence in undergraduate teaching. The 21-hour annual course load will typically entail teaching multiple sections of introductory Religion courses, an upper-level Religion course, and an interdisciplinary course. Our two newest introductory courses are “Beginning with Abraham,” which is a thematic approach to issues presented in the Tanak, Christian Bible, and Qur’an; and “Why Religion Matters,” which is an engagement of religions of the world with a focus upon sacred texts. The successful candidate would teach existing upper-level courses in Eastern Religions (with Indian and Chinese origins) and Western Religions (Judaism and Islam) and would be encouraged to develop expanded options according to research interests and the needs of the department. While Mercer offers a number of interdisciplinary programs such as Women’s and Gender Studies and Great Books, we anticipate that the new faculty member would initially contribute to a junior/senior level, integrative course where students engage world issues through a variety of lenses.

Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled.

Candidates should have a Ph. D. degree from an accredited college/university in Religious Studies (or comparable field) with a primary focus on Islam, along with a secondary competency in religions of Eastern origins.
